GEO vs SEO: What Changes and What Stays the Same

GEO vs SEO is one of the most common questions businesses ask about AI search. Do you need a new strategy for ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews, or is SEO still enough? The short answer: GEO does not replace SEO. It builds on it. Most of what makes a website visible in classic search also makes it usable for AI answers, and a few things matter more than before. This article explains what changes, what stays the same and what to do about it.

What Is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the work of making a website easy for search engines to crawl, understand and rank. It covers technical health, content that matches what people search for, internal links, links from other sites and a good experience for visitors. The goal is to appear in search results and win the click.

What Is GEO?

Generative engine optimization is the work of making a business and its content visible in answers produced by AI systems, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI features. The term was introduced in a 2023 research paper that described GEO as a framework to help content creators improve the visibility of their content in generative engine responses (arXiv).

You may also see related terms such as AEO (answer engine optimization) or AIO. They describe the same direction: being found, understood and cited by AI, not only ranked in a list of links.

What Stays the Same

Google is direct about this. It states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. Its recommendations are the same SEO fundamentals: make sure crawlers are not blocked, link to important pages internally, offer a good page experience, keep important content in text form, make structured data match the visible page and keep Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date (Google Search Central).

Get In Touch

In practice, this means a company with a slow, poorly structured website and thin content will struggle in both classic and AI search. The foundation is shared:

  • A technically healthy website that search engines and AI crawlers can access.
  • Clear pages for each service, with real information, not slogans.
  • Content that answers the questions clients actually ask.
  • Accurate, consistent business information across the web.

What Changes

Answers Instead of Lists

In classic search, a user sees ten results and chooses. In an AI answer, the system often summarizes several sources and may mention only a few companies. Being one of the sources it relies on matters more than ranking seventh.

Different Crawlers and Platforms

Each AI platform has its own systems. OpenAI, for example, uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features and states that sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Its other crawler, GPTBot, is used for training models, and the two can be allowed or blocked separately (OpenAI). A robots.txt file written years ago may block exactly the crawlers you now need. Our article on which AI crawlers to allow in robots.txt covers the details.

Your Presence Beyond Your Website

AI systems form a picture of a company from many sources: its own site, business profiles, directories, reviews, articles and mentions. Consistent information across these sources helps AI describe the business correctly. For local businesses, the Google Business Profile plays a particular role, which we explain in why your Google Business Profile affects what AI says about you.

Clarity and Specificity

Vague marketing text is hard to quote. Pages that clearly state who the company serves, what it offers, where it works and how the process looks give AI systems something concrete to use. The same clarity also helps human visitors decide faster.

New Ways to Measure

Classic SEO is measured by rankings, clicks and traffic. AI visibility needs additional checks: whether the company appears in answers to relevant questions, how it is described and which pages are cited. Some tools now report this directly. Bing Webmaster Tools, for example, includes an AI Performance report with citation data. Regular manual checks across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity remain useful.

GEO vs SEO at a Glance

  • Goal: SEO aims for rankings and clicks. GEO aims for mentions, citations and accurate descriptions in AI answers.
  • Foundation: the same in both cases: a crawlable, fast, well-structured website with useful content.
  • Scope: SEO focuses mainly on your website. GEO puts more weight on your presence across external platforms.
  • Measurement: SEO uses Search Console and rankings. GEO adds AI answer monitoring and citation reports.

Common Myths

  • “SEO is dead.” AI features rely on the same fundamentals. Weak SEO usually means weak AI visibility.
  • “One file or one trick will get us into ChatGPT.” There is no single setting that guarantees AI visibility. Google, for example, states that no special optimizations are needed for its AI features beyond SEO best practices.
  • “GEO is only about content.” Technical access, structured data, business profiles and external mentions all play a part.

What to Do Next

  1. Check the foundation: technical SEO, page speed, indexing and structured data.
  2. Review crawler access: make sure robots.txt and your hosting or CDN do not block the search crawlers you want.
  3. Improve key pages: clear service descriptions, real answers to client questions and accurate company information.
  4. Align external profiles: Google Business Profile, directories and review platforms with consistent details.
  5. Measure both: keep tracking search performance and start checking how AI assistants describe your business.

GEO and SEO work best as one plan, not two separate projects. That is how we approach it: website, SEO, content and external presence together. See our AIO and AI visibility services, or read how to choose an AI search optimization agency in Cyprus.
