Payment Gateway Integration Checklist for Fintech Startups in the EU

Picking a payment gateway feels like a technical decision – API documentation, SDK quality, integration time. In the EU, it is also a compliance decision, and treating it purely as engineering work is how startups end up rebuilding their payment stack six months after launch. Here is the checklist that actually matters.

1. PSD2 and Strong Customer Authentication Support

Any gateway processing EU card payments must support PSD2’s Strong Customer Authentication requirements natively. This is not optional and not something to bolt on later – verify the gateway’s SCA implementation before signing anything, including how it handles exemptions for low-risk transactions.

2. Local Payment Method Coverage

Card payments are not the default across the EU the way they are in some markets. iDEAL in the Netherlands, SOFORT and Giropay in Germany, Bancontact in Belgium – a gateway without local method support quietly caps your addressable market in specific countries before you have even launched there.

3. Settlement Currency and Timing

Multi-currency support sounds like a checkbox feature until you look at settlement timing and conversion fees. Some gateways settle in your base currency automatically at unfavorable rates; others let you hold multiple currencies and convert on your own schedule. This difference compounds meaningfully at scale.

4. PCI DSS Compliance Scope

The gateway’s PCI compliance level determines how much compliance burden falls on you. A fully hosted payment page keeps card data off your servers entirely and minimizes your compliance scope. A more flexible, embedded integration gives you more UX control but pulls more compliance responsibility onto your own infrastructure.

5. Dispute and Chargeback Handling

Chargeback rates and dispute resolution processes vary significantly between providers – some offer automated evidence submission and fraud pattern detection, others leave you manually assembling documentation for every dispute. For a startup without a dedicated finance operations team, this difference has a real operational cost.

6. Webhook Reliability and Idempotency

Payment status webhooks are how your system knows a transaction succeeded, failed, or is pending. A gateway with unreliable webhook delivery, or without built-in idempotency keys to prevent duplicate processing, creates silent data integrity issues that are painful to debug after the fact.

7. Sandbox and Testing Environment Quality

A gateway’s sandbox environment should let you simulate the full range of edge cases – failed authentications, expired cards, disputed transactions, currency conversion errors – before any of them happen with real customer money. A thin sandbox that only covers the happy path means your team discovers edge cases in production.

Choosing Early Saves You a Rebuild Later

None of these factors are visible from a pricing page comparison. They surface during integration, during your first international expansion, or during your first serious dispute – at which point switching providers becomes a significant engineering project rather than a checklist item.
