KYC vs UX: Why FinTech Onboarding Forms Lose Users

Every fintech platform needs KYC. Almost none of them need to lose 60% of users during it. The gap between “legally compliant” and “usable” is where most onboarding flows fail – and it is almost always a design problem, not a regulatory one.

Problem 1: Asking for Everything Up Front

The most common mistake: a single long form asking for ID upload, proof of address, source of funds, and personal details all before the user has any sense of what they are signing up for. Most users abandon before reaching the submit button.

Platforms with higher completion rates break KYC into progressive steps – basic details first, identity verification second, financial details last – so users commit incrementally rather than facing one intimidating wall of fields.

Problem 2: No Clear Reason for Each Data Request

Users are more willing to share sensitive information when they understand why it is needed. A field labeled simply “Source of Funds” without context reads as suspicious. The same field with a one-line explanation – “required under EU AML regulations to verify your account” – reduces hesitation and drop-off.

Problem 3: Document Upload That Fails Silently

Blurry photo, wrong file format, expired document – and the form either rejects it with no explanation or, worse, accepts it and fails verification days later with no notification. Users assume they are done and never return.

Good onboarding flows validate documents in real time, tell users exactly what went wrong, and let them retry immediately rather than discovering a failure through a delayed email.

Problem 4: No Progress Indicator

KYC processes typically involve multiple steps across different screens. Without a visible progress indicator, users have no idea how much is left – and abandon out of uncertainty rather than actual friction. A simple “Step 2 of 4” changes completion behavior significantly.

Problem 5: Desktop-Only Design for a Mobile-First User Base

Document capture, in particular, is frequently designed around desktop file upload rather than mobile camera capture – even though most users complete onboarding from their phone. A camera-first upload flow, with automatic image cropping and quality checks, removes one of the biggest friction points in the entire process.

Compliance and Conversion Are Not Opposites

None of these fixes require loosening compliance standards. Every regulatory requirement stays in place – what changes is how the request is presented, sequenced, and validated. The platforms with the highest onboarding completion rates are not the ones asking for less. They are the ones asking better.

If your KYC flow is technically compliant but losing users before activation, the fix is almost always in the UX layer. Contact Maskwel Holdings for a free review of your onboarding flow.
